Justin Glover Wins Thriller In Qualifier #2 For COMP Cams® Memphis Nationals

Despite finding himself behind early in the race, Justin Glover stayed focused and drove his #51 Camaro Street Stock through the field to record the feature win in the second qualifier for the upcoming COMP Cams® Memphis Nationals

Four years ago COMP Cams® Director of Marketing, Chris Douglas, conceptualized a special event that would highlight true grass root racers. Douglas recognized that there were plenty of specials in the dirt track racing world that focused on Sprint Cars and Late Models but few, if any, focused on the Street Stock division. As a result, Douglas, along with Ben Shelton of MidSouthRacing.com, developed a unique event that was tabbed the “COMP Cams® Grass Roots Nationals” at Riverside International Speedway in West Memphis, Arkansas in 2007. The cornerstone of the event was the Street Stock division, which competed for a purse that was double the normal payout, including a $1,000 first place prize. Time trials, a dash for cash, heat races, B-mains, driver introductions and a primetime feature event were all held for the Street Stock class. The response for the first time event was a car count in excess of 40 cars and a feature event that went caution free with two and three wide racing throughout the field.

Over the next few years the event grew by leaps and bounds in terms of support. Consequently, for the 2010 event, COMP Cams® decided to take the concept to a whole new level. The end result is an entirely new program that includes a pair of qualifying events throughout the year and a grand finale slated for Saturday, September 18, 2010, at Riverside International Speedway. The grand finale has been dubbed the “COMP Cams® Memphis Nationals” and includes a purse that more than triples the total weekly purse of the Street Stock division, with a $1,500 to win/$100 to start payout. Appropriately, the qualifying events have been coined the “COMP Cams® Road To The Nationals Qualifiers”, with each event posting $500 to win, plus the guarantee that the winner of each will be granted a provisional starting position in the September finale.

After seeing the 2009 COMP Cams® Grass Root Nationals Champion, Greg Alexander of Blytheville, AR, win the first Memphis Nationals Qualifier on April 10, the Street Stock competitors at Riverside recognized the urgency of winning the next qualifier on June 26 to guarantee themselves a starting spot in the upcoming COMP Cams® Memphis Nationals finale. The finale race is expected to draw over forty entries, and qualifying for the 20 car starting grid will be difficult with over half of the field not even qualifying.

One of the competitors who recognized the necessity of qualifying for the finale in advance was 2009 Riverside International Speedway Track Champion, Justin Glover. As he prepared for the feature in the COMP Cams® Memphis Nationals qualifier on June 26, Glover felt confident

about his chances to claim the win, as he was slated to start in the third position. However, on the first lap, Justin spun out while exiting turn two and was forced to go to the back of the field.

Glover has won from the back of the pack at Riverside in the past, so he knew it was possible to do it again. As the race returned to green flag conditions, Josh Ray, Mike Bowles and Greg Alexander waged war for the lead as Glover began methodically working through the pack. Two laps later the caution waved as the leader, Josh Ray had his own difficulties in turn two and he also spun out, which allowed Bowles to take over the lead.

For the next several laps, Bowles fended off the furious advances of Alexander. Lap 10 saw the leaders entering heavy lapped traffic as Justin Glover moved into the third spot. On lap 13 Glover make a daring move around Alexander while leaving turn four in order to claim the second spot. Still leading, Bowles was still making his way through lapped traffic, which battled side-by-side in front of him. Bowles managed to maintain the lead until the white flag lap, when Glover made a power move on the high-side when exiting turn four to take the lead for the last ¼ lap and claim the $500 win and the guaranteed provisional in the COMP Cams® Memphis Street Stock Nationals. The crowd went wild.

With Greg Alexander and Justin Glover both guaranteed starting spots in the COMP Cams® Memphis Nationals on Saturday, September 18th, 2010, at Riverside International Speedway, the balance of the competitors will now face the daunting task of racing their way into the coveted, 20 car starting grid via a program that will include time trials, heat races, B-mains and a 25- lap feature event.
